Italian Home Cooking


It was my dream to study abroad in Italy. I waited for the right time, and to my surprise, I turned 72 years old, but I made it happen for a total of 8 weeks: 4 weeks of home cooking and 4 weeks of jewelry! The support of my family gave me strength. I am determined to fully enjoy the two months I have been given.

夢だったイタリア留学、タイミングを待っていたら何と72歳になってしまいましたが、家庭料理4週間、ジュエリー4週間の計8週間を実現!家族の応援が力になりました。与えられた2ヶ月間を満喫したいと思っています。

Jewelry Making Short Course (#5) – M.I.

With the start of the second half of our home cooking lessons, we finally have only two weeks left in our summer course. Today’s menu is full of vegetables, and I am looking forward to the menu as summer vegetables will become more and more delicious from now on. After school, we went to the Medici Chapel. I feel that Florence is connected to the Medici family and Michelangelo, and I would like to study more about this area when I return to Japan.

後半のホームクッキングレッスンがスタートで、 いよいよサマーコースも残すところ2週間。今日は野菜の多いメニューでこれから夏野菜がどんどん美味しくなるので、メニューも楽しみ。放課後はメディチ家礼拝堂に行く。フィレンツェはメディチ家とミケランジェロに全て繋がっている気がして、日本に戻ったらこの辺りをもっと勉強してみたい。

On the day off from lessons, I went out to Assisi with a friend. It was a bit far from Florence, about 2.5 hours by Trenitalia, but it was a place I had wanted to visit at least once since I became interested in Italy. The city is a hilly town with the Basilica of Santa Chiara, Rocca Maggiore, and the Basilica of San Francesco. The heat wave had stopped and a pleasant breeze blew over the hills, and the gelato was delicious. I can only thank my friend for inviting me.

レッスン休日日、友人とアッシジに出かける。フィレンツェからはトレニタリアで約2時間半とちょっと遠いのだが、イタリアに興味を抱いてから一度は行きたいと思っていた所だった。サンタ・キアーラ聖堂,ロッカ・マッジョーレ,サンフランチェスコ聖堂などをめぐる坂道の街。連日の猛暑も収まり丘の上を気持ちの良い風がぬけ、ジェラートも美味しかった。誘ってくれた友人に感謝しかない。

Today’s menu was Tuscan-style long and thin bell peppers, sardine pasta, eggs in tomato sauce, and fluffy cakes, but it was a rare experience to prepare a large amount of raw sardines by hand! Of course it tasted great. Thank you for the meal.

今日のメニュー
細長い小ぶりのピーマンのトスカーナ風、イワシのパスタ、トマトソースに入り卵、ふわふわのケーキだったが、多量の生のイワシを手でさばく下準備はなかなか無い体験!もちろん最高の味だった。ごちそうさま。

The long-awaited making of fresh pasta! This time, four students followed the teacher’s example, but it was quite difficult. Even one of the noodles was thicker, thinner, or had a section that was not round… The result was, of course, a variation in firmness and texture! But the thicker (udon-like) pasta called Pici was very hearty and delicious .

待望の生パスタ造り!今回は4人の生徒が先生の見本に沿って作るのだがなかなか難しく、麺の長さはある程度バラバラでも、太さは同じくらいで無いと茹でた時の硬さに差が出る。その1本でさえも太い所、細い所、断面が丸くない所が、、、結果はやはり当然ながら固さと食感がばらばら!でもPiciと言う太めの(うどんのようなコシのある)パスタは、とても心のこもったおいしい<カチョエペペ>でした。

This week’s Art Visit is “In the Footsteps of Dante” This one will be over in just one session, even though the summer course is getting more and more students participating. Walking around the city while learning many things you can’t understand just by sightseeing is a fun and meaningful experience that is different from a course lesson.

今週のアートビジットは、『ダンテの足跡をたどる』サマーコースも学生さん達の参加が増えて来たのに、こちらはあと一回で終了。ただ観光しているだけでは解らない事をたくさん教えて頂きながらの街歩きは、コースレッスンとはまた違う楽しく有意義な時間。

The last cultural activity for me was “San Gimignano”! The weather was perfect and we were able to enjoy the beautiful view of Tuscany, walk around the town, and enjoy gelato together.

自分とっての最後のカルチャーアクティビティは、『サン・ジミニャーノ』お天気にも恵まれ、これぞトスカーナ!という絶景も、街歩きも、みんなでいただいたジェラートも、すべて満足満足。

I will finally finish the course at the end of next week. 2 months of the course went by so fast.
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable final week.

いよいよ来週末で修了。2ヶ月のコースも過ぎてしまうとあっという間だった。
最終週も思い残す事がないよう、無事で楽しく過ごせますように。
